A lawn that gets cut on a schedule looks better and costs less to keep than one that gets rescued every few months. Greensward NZ mows residential and small commercial lawns right across Auckland — from compact Flat Bush courtyards to half-acre Whitford sections — on a run that turns up the same day each week.
Every visit includes the mow, the edges, and the clean-up. We blow paths and driveways clear before we leave, and the clippings go with us. You should not be able to tell we were there apart from the lawn.
What's included
- Mowing at the correct height for your grass type and the season
- Line trimming around fences, trees, garden beds and letterboxes
- Hard edging along concrete paths and driveways
- Paths, decks and drives blown clear of clippings
- Green waste removed from site (or mulched back on request)
- Photo update if you're not home — you'll know it's done
How often should an Auckland lawn be mowed?
Auckland's growing season is long. From roughly October through to April, kikuyu and couch lawns put on serious growth and want cutting every 7–10 days. Push past that and you end up scalping the lawn to get it back down, which stresses the grass and invites weeds into the gaps.
Through winter — June to August — growth slows right down and most lawns are comfortable on a three or four weekly cut. We adjust the run automatically as the season turns, so you're not paying for visits the lawn doesn't need in July, and you're not left with a paddock in January.
Fescue and ryegrass lawns, common in older Mount Eden and Royal Oak properties, behave differently again — they keep ticking over in the cool and slow in the heat. We set the frequency to the lawn in front of us rather than a one-size calendar.
Cutting height matters more than cutting often
The single most common mistake we see on Auckland lawns is cutting too short. A low cut exposes soil to sunlight, which is exactly what broadleaf weeds, oxalis and summer grass need to establish. It also burns off the leaf the grass uses to feed itself, so the lawn thins and recovers slowly.
As a rule we never remove more than a third of the leaf in one pass, and we lift the height going into summer so the sward shades its own root zone and holds moisture through the dry spells. In practice that means a slightly longer-looking lawn in February and a much greener one in March.
One-off rescue cuts and long grass
If a property has been left — a rental between tenants, a house going to market, a section that got away over the holidays — we can handle it. Long grass usually takes two passes with a mulching deck plus a full green waste removal, so it's quoted separately from a regular cut.
Once it's back under control, most owners move onto a regular run, which is considerably cheaper than repeating the rescue every few months.
Lawn Mowing & Maintenance — common questions
How much does lawn mowing cost in Auckland?
Greensward NZ charges from $25 per visit, including edges, line trimming and green waste removal. What you pay depends on the size of the section and how much growth there is — larger sections, steep banks and long-grass rescue cuts are quoted after a look at the property. You get a fixed price in writing before we start.
Do you take the grass clippings away?
Yes. Clippings leave with us as part of the standard price — we don't fill your bins or charge per bag. If you'd prefer the clippings mulched back into the lawn to return nitrogen to the soil, tell us and we'll set the deck up for that instead.
Do I need to be home when you mow?
No. Most of our regular clients aren't. We just need gate access and somewhere to plug in if the property has locked side access. If you're not there we'll send a photo once the job's done.
How often should I have my lawn mowed?
In Auckland, every 7–10 days from October to April and every 3–4 weeks over winter suits most kikuyu and couch lawns. We adjust the frequency through the season rather than charging for visits your lawn doesn't need.
Do you mow rental properties and body corporate lawns?
Yes. We look after rentals for private landlords and property managers across East and South Auckland, plus common areas for small body corporates. We invoice monthly and can send completion photos for your records.
