They're layout problems — a washing line in the sunniest corner, a lawn shape that takes twenty minutes to mow around, a bed that gets no water because it sits under the eaves, or a beautiful planting plan for a section that turns out to be solid clay.

Design that accounts for maintenance
Every design decision has an ongoing cost in time. Sweeping curved lawn edges look great on a plan and take three times as long to edge as a straight run. A dozen small garden beds cut into a lawn each need their own edge maintained. Gravel next to a lawn means gravel in the mower.
We design with that in mind — mowable shapes, defined edges, planting massed rather than dotted, and mulched beds that suppress weeds instead of hosting them. The result costs less to keep looking good, which matters more over ten years than how it photographs on day one.
Planting for the Auckland climate
Auckland's humid, frost-free, wind-exposed climate rules out a lot of what appears in overseas garden content and rewards a specific palette. Natives like corokia, hebe, libertia, carex and coprosma handle exposure and clay without fuss. Griselinia and pittosporum give structure and screening fast.
For coastal sites — Beachlands, Whitford, Bucklands Beach — salt wind narrows the list further, and we lean on pōhutukawa, flax, muehlenbeckia and olearia that genuinely tolerate it rather than plants that merely survive a season.
Staging a build you can afford
Few people want to spend a landscaping budget in one hit, and they don't need to. We stage plans so each phase is complete and usable in itself: hard landscaping and levels first, because they're disruptive and everything else sits on them, then structural planting, then lawn, then the detail planting and finishing.
That way stage one looks finished rather than half-built, and you can pause between stages without the garden looking like a work site.
Landscape Design — common questions
How much does landscape design cost in Auckland?
The quote is free. A concept plan covers a site visit, measure-up, layout plan, planting plan and a staged cost estimate, and is priced per project once we've seen the section and know what you want from it. If Greensward NZ goes on to build the garden, the design fee is credited against the build.
Do you build the gardens you design?
Yes. We build most of what we design — planting, mulching, edging, lawn, paths and fencing. For specialist trades such as retaining walls requiring engineering, decking, or electrical work for garden lighting, we co-ordinate licensed contractors.
How long does a landscape design take?
Usually two to three weeks from the site visit to a concept plan, plus a week for revisions after your feedback. Build timeframes depend on scope and the weather — Auckland winters can add time to any job involving earthworks.
Can you design a low-maintenance garden?
That's the most common brief we get. Low maintenance comes from massed planting rather than specimen dotting, generous mulch depth, defined edges, mowable lawn shapes and species suited to the site. It doesn't mean no maintenance — it means a garden that needs a few hours a month instead of a few hours a week.
